Interim leader named permanent vice president for student affairs

The University of Toledo’s interim leader of the Division of Student Affairs has been named to the post permanently.

Dr. Phillip “Flapp” Cockrell will serve as vice president for student affairs effective Jan. 1. He had served in the role on an interim basis since June 1.

“Flapp is a passionate leader who is committed to student success and motivating his team to provide the best service possible,” President Sharon L. Gaber said. “I look forward to his continued leadership and the initiatives he will put in place to enhance student life on our campus.”

“I am proud to be part of The University of Toledo community and appreciate the president’s support,” Cockrell said. “I look forward to continuing to work collaboratively with the administration, faculty, staff and students to strengthen the student experience both personally and professionally.”

Cockrell is responsible for the conduct, counseling and advocacy of UT students. He oversees student life activities, including the on-campus residence halls of 3000+ students and more than 250 student organizations, and the Thompson Student Union on Main Campus.

The offices and departments that make up the Division of Student Affairs include the Office of the Dean of Students; Office of Residence Life; University Counseling Center; Office of Multicultural Student Success; Office of Recreation; Office of Greek Life; Office of Student Conduct and Community Standards; Office of Student Involvement and Leadership; Office of Student Advocacy and Support; Toledo Excel; Center for Experiential Learning and Career Services; Office of International Student and Scholar Services; Title IX; and Upward Bound.

Cockrell joined UT in April 2016 as associate vice president of student affairs and dean of students. He came to UT from Jackson State University in Mississippi, where he served as associate vice provost for student affairs and dean of students. His career has included additional experience in student affairs roles at Mississippi University for Women, Ohio State University and Florida International University.

He has a bachelor’s degree in family studies from Mississippi University for Women, a master’s degree in educational leadership and student affairs from Florida International University, and a doctorate in urban higher education from Jackson State University.
