Practice walking safety this winter on UT campuses
By Chris Ankney : January 5th, 2010As the weather gets colder and the ground gets icier, it’s important to use extra caution when walking across campus. The Department of Safety and Health is encouraging the University community to review some easy winter walking safety tips in order to prepare for treks across campus in wet or icy conditions.
Be sure to wear proper footgear. Make boots and shoes with aggressive tread part of your winter fashion, and avoid unseasonal flip-flops and other flat-footed and traction-less attire.
Stick to the clear paths. Don’t worry about saving time; instead, save yourself from injuries by staying away from unplowed sidewalks and snow-covered fields.
Use handrails when available. If you’re a germaphobe, you can always wash your hands later; it’s more difficult to recover from a nasty spill down the stairs.
Walk slowly and take smaller steps. This increases your balance and decreases the likelihood that you’ll fall from a slip.
If you see snowy or icy walkways, report them to the grounds crew on the appropriate campus. Call 419.383.5353 on Health Science Campus or 419.530.1000 on Main Campus.
