UT competing in national recycling tournament
By Emily Hickey : February 5th, 2010More than 65,000 pounds of recyclables were collected from The University of Toledo campuses over the past two weeks.
While separating and measuring all recycled materials leaving campus, UT officials decided to participate in 2010 Recyclemania Tournament — a 10-week competition between Jan. 17 and March 27 to see which of the 500 participating universities can recycle the most materials.
In 2009, the competition collected more than 65 million pounds of recyclables and named California State University at San Marcos its winner.
This year Tom Trimble, associate director of the Student Union, is helping to lead the University in Recyclemania and is excited about the permanent impact this competition could have on all of UT’s campuses.
Trimble said he would like recycling to become a contagious practice for all faculty, staff, students and University visitors.
The competition aims to heighten awareness of a school’s waste management and recycling programs while increasing recycling participation by everyone on campus.
Trimble wants recycling on campus to be just as easy as throwing materials in the trash and encourages those who do not have the proper recycling containers to call Dan Royer from Recycling Services at 419.530.4942.
Some of the materials that will be accepted for 2010 Recyclemania include:
• Plastic bottles;
• Detergent containers;
• Newspapers;
• Magazines;
• Copy paper;
• Cereal boxes;
• Corrugated cardboard, including pizza boxes;
• Paper bags;
• Aluminum/steel/tin cans; and
• Glass bottles and jars.
