The selection of an interim dean for the Judith Herb College of Education has taken a new turn, as a current University of Toledo trustee is considered for the post.
According to an e-mail Dr. Rosemary Haggett, Main Campus provost and executive vice president for academic affairs, sent to the college’s faculty and staff, “This morning, President Jacobs sent a letter to Gov. Ted Strickland requesting that Dr. Tom Brady, chairman, CEO and founder of Plastic Technologies Inc., be provided a leave of absence from his role as a UT trustee so he may have the potential opportunity to serve as interim dean of the Judith Herb College of Education.”
If his leave is approved by the governor, the University would enter negotiations with Brady to serve in the role.
“While Dr. Brady is not the typical selection for this kind of role,” Haggett said, “I believe he will emerge as a strong advocate for the faculty and students of the Judith Herb College of Education, and will provide exceedingly valuable perspectives that will benefit the college for years to come.”
Brady earned his PhD in engineering from the University of Michigan in 1972, as well as a master’s degree in materials science and a bachelor of arts degree in engineering science from Dartmouth College.
“Tom Brady is an accomplished community leader with a long record of advocacy for education, the arts and research funding,” said President Lloyd Jacobs. “While there are several steps we must take before we finalize this decision, we are extremely excited for the possibility. He is not only passionate about education, he is passionate about UT.”
A member of numerous boards and professional societies, Haggett noted that Brady “has gained an in-depth understanding of the vital role that educators play in strengthening our society. His background, enthusiasm and track record of success make him an exciting candidate for this interim position.”
The current dean, Dr. Thomas Switzer, will step down from the post Aug. 1. He will retain his faculty appointment.
