UT junior finance major Carlos Ruiz was invited to testify before the Higher Education Subcommittee of the House Finance and Appropriations Committee March 10.

Ruiz was among four university students to speak before the general assembly; they urged legislators to keep education costs affordable for students.

A tutor in his spare time, the Nicaragua native has used scholarships and loans to pay for school and fears that students like him may not be able to afford a university-quality education in the future.

Ruiz told the committee, “It is for these up and coming students that Ohio must sustain high levels of investment in education if we are to keep our state and its economy moving forward.”

The subcommittee heard testimony in advance of making budget recommendations to the full House Finance Appropriations Committee in the future.
