  • UT rolls out diversity training initiative

    By Staff : April 8th, 2009

    The Online Cultural Competence and Diversity Training Module and an interactive half-day workshop are now available.

    “Promoting individual and institutional cultural competence places the University on the cutting edge by increasing cultural awareness, valuing differences, and emphasizing the importance of creating an environment that promotes inclusion and excellence,” said Sandra Rivers-Gill, manager of diversity programs for the UT Office of Institutional Diversity.

    “This training helps to improve the human condition through dialogue and is consistent with the University’s core values: diversity, integrity and teamwork,” she added. “It will also promote the development of skills that will enhance productivity and communication.”

    “The training allows our employees to gain a better understanding of and an appreciation for the dynamics of difference in a journey toward achieving cultural competence at The University of Toledo,” said Dr. Samuel Hancock, assistant to the president for diversity. “This education, coupled with involvement in culturally related activities across campus, is an important component in overall inclusion and diversity strategies.”

    The online module can be accessed by logging into http://myut.utoledo.edu.  The link can then be found on the Employee tab in the Training & Career Development Channel.

    The module must be completed prior to registering and attending any of the interactive workshops. Continuing education units will be awarded to physicians/doctors of osteopathic medicine, social workers and counselors. Registration levels will dictate confirmation of workshop occurrences.

    Available dates for the workshops are:

    • Thursday, April 16, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Health Science Campus;

    • Wednesday, April 22, 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Health Science Campus;

    • Thursday, April 30, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Main Campus;

    • Wednesday, May 6, 12:30 to 4:30 p.m. on Main Campus; and

    • Thursday, May 7, 8:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Health Science Campus.

    Contact the Office of Institutional Diversity at 419.383.3438 or 419.530.2508 to register or for more information.
