UT to observe Sexual Assault Awareness Week
By Kate Wente : April 12th, 2010Take Back the Night, a campus-community collaboration sponsored by dozens of University departments and area groups, will be the final event in UT’s recognition of Sexual Assault Awareness Week. It will take place Saturday, April 17, at the Wayman Palmer YMCA, 2053 N. 14th St.
Take Back the Night addresses all forms of violence against women, including sexual and intimate partner violence, stalking, child sexual abuse and incest, and sexual harassment. Events will include a community rally, women’s march, survivor speakout, men’s program and resource fair. In addition, the Clothesline Project — T-shirts created by local survivors of violence against women and family and friends of victims — and the Silent Witness Project — silhouettes to honor northwest Ohio women murdered by their partners — will be on display.
The resource fair and displays will open at 6 p.m., and the events will begin at 7 p.m.
A free shuttle will travel from UT to the Wayman Palmer YMCA. The bus will depart from the Transportation Center at 6 p.m. and the YMCA at 10:30 p.m.
In addition to Take Back the Night, UT will hold events throughout Sexual Assault Awareness Week. Listed by date, events to take place on Main Campus will be:

— Brown-bag discussion on “Supporting a Survivor of Sexual Violence: What to Say and What Not to Say” with Diane Docis, coordinator of the UT Sexual Assault Education and Prevention Program, and others at 12:30 p.m. in Student Union Room 2500.
—
• Wednesday, April 14 — The Clothesline Project will be on display from 11 a.m to 7 p.m. in the Student Union South Lounge.
• Thursday, April 15 — Catharine S. Eberly Center for Women brown-bag conversation with the Toledo Take Back the Night collective from 12:30 to 1:30 p.m. in Libbey Hall.
— Movie, “Hip Hop: Beyond Beats and Rhymes,” will be shown at 7 p.m. in Student Union Room 2582. Byron Hurt’s documentary explores gender roles in hip-hop and rap music. He tackles issues of masculinity, sexism, violence and homophobia by talking with rappers, moguls and fans.
“This is such a powerful week,” Docis said. “It really breaks the silence around the issue of sexual violence. It is so important to educate everyone — all genders, ages and ethnicities — because sexual violence won’t end until we recognize that there’s something we all can do about it. Our goal is to turn awareness into action.”
“As a survivor, I find Take Back the Night very empowering, not only seeing other survivors but also seeing the community’s support for ending violence against women,” said Takara McDaniel, a UT graduate student in social work and intern with the UT Sexual Assault Education and Prevention Program.
