By Kate Wente : April 13th, 2010The University of Toledo’s Physician Assistant Program recently won the Medical Challenge Bowl event at the Ohio Association of Physician Assistants Conference in Columbus.

Students in the Physician Assistant Program, from left, Rachel Mutchler, Meghan Reiser and Katie Hay held the trophy they won at the Medical Challenge Bowl event at the Ohio Association of Physician Assistants Conference.
“The format of the competition consisted of two teams of three that were seated opposite each other with a moderator in between,” said April Gardner, assistant professor and academic coordinator in the UT Physician Assistant Program. “The two teams had three rounds with 10 questions in each round, and the winner of the first heat then played the winner of the second heat for the championship.”
Toledo competed against Marietta in the first heat and won, 12-5. Mount Union beat out Kettering in the second heat, making for a championship game between Toledo and Mount Union. Toledo went on to win the championship, 13-3.
Answering questions for UT were Katie Hay, Rachel Mutchler and Meghan Reiser. Two alternates also are on the team: Jill Burton and Jim Bitz. The team is coached by Gardner and Jay Peterson, assistant professor of physician assistant studies.
“This competition gives the physician assistant students an opportunity to display their knowledge and recognize the high level of medical knowledge they possess,” Peterson said. “On the state level, this competition showed the benefits of attending the UT Physician Assistant Program.”
“The UT Physician Assistant Program Medical Challenge Bowl Team will enter the National Medical Challenge Bowl Competition in Atlanta at the American Academy of Physician Assistants annual conference over Memorial Day Weekend,” Gardener said. “It is a very competitive process and event, and only 48 teams from the 148 physician assistant programs can be entered on a first-come, first serve basis.”
Gardner added, “The Physician Assistant Department faculty members are very proud and supportive of the challenge bowl team’s effort and victory. We look forward to the chance for this team to represent The University of Toledo Physician Assistant Program on the national level.”
