Undergraduate students to present research at state Capitol
By Staff : April 13th, 2010Undergraduate students from across northwest Ohio will display their research at the third annual Posters at the Capitol at the Ohio Statehouse in Columbus Thursday, April 15.
More than 50 students from The University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University, the University of Findlay, Ohio Northern University and Heidelberg University will display 47 posters and discuss their research at the event, which will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. in the atrium of the Statehouse.
Ohio First Lady Frances Strickland will welcome the students, who will present their research to state legislators, members of the Ohio Board of Regents, staff and visitors to the Statehouse.
“Posters at the Capitol is an important event for undergraduate students from northwest Ohio to showcase their research,” said Dr. Thomas Kvale, director of the UT Office of Undergraduate Research. “This event is designed for students to become more involved with their elected officials and thank them for their support and for the representatives and senators to learn more about the students’ research and discoveries on a one-on-one basis.”
Projects span a variety of disciplines and include a UT student researching the most efficient materials for thin-film photovoltaic cells, BGSU students compiling an audio history of area residents’ experiences during the Great Depression, UF students tracking the population of the American bullfrog in a northwest Ohio wetland, a Heidelberg student studying e. coli bacteria in raw milk, and ONU students researching drug-protein interactions.
Undergraduate students from all disciplines from 14 northwest Ohio universities and colleges were invited to submit abstracts for research posters to be presented at Posters at the Capitol. Students selected for participation designed and produced professional-quality research posters that highlight their research and its significance for Ohio.
This event is modeled after the highly successful national Council on Undergraduate Research Posters on the Hill display held annually in the Capitol of the United States in Washington, D.C.
Posters at the Capitol is supported by the UT Office of Undergraduate Research, the BGSU Center for Undergraduate Research and Scholarship, the University of Findlay, Ohio Northern University and the UT chapter of Sigma Xi: The Scientific Research Society.
