UT honors Occupational Therapy Month
By Kate Wente : April 26th, 2010Each year in April, occupational therapists everywhere help promote and celebrate Occupational Therapy (OT) Month. This year, The University of Toledo Medical Center is helping do just that.
During OT Month, occupational therapists, occupational therapy assistants, and students in practice, education, research and science host a monthlong celebration showcasing the importance of the profession.
“Here at UT, the OT students have organized a table to advocate for OT Month,” said Mallory Priest, UT OT student. “The table will be located near the cafeteria at UTMC and will have a tri-fold board and unique occupational therapy assistive devices.”
In addition, students will pass out fact sheets about occupational therapy services offered at UTM
According to the American Occupational Therapy Association, the purpose of occupational therapy is to get beyond problems to the solutions that assure living life to its fullest. These solutions may be adaptations for how to do a task, changes to the surroundings, or helping individuals to alter their own behaviors.
“We are really just trying to educate the public about the services occupational therapy has to offer,” said Lisa Melville, UT occupational therapist. “We offer great acute and outpatient care as well as specialty programs, such as our occupational therapy driver rehabilitation program. It is the only driver rehabilitation program in northwest Ohio.”
