Student-athlete named MAC Golfer of Year, team takes second at MAC Championships

Toledo fell eight strokes short of its first conference title since 2004 in Sunday’s final round of the 2015 Mid-American Conference Championships.

Miami captured the tourney crown with a 72-hole total of eight-over par 1,160 (287-289-294-290), while the Rockets shot 16-over par 1,168 (296-293-289-290) at the par-72, 7,245-yard Mayfield Sand Ridge Club in South Euclid, Ohio.

Senior Chris Selfridge spearheaded UT’s efforts with a fourth-place tie at one-over par 289 (74-69-72-74), two strokes behind medalist Johnny Watts of Ball State’s one-under par total.

Selfridge was honored following the tournament by being named MAC Men’s Golfer of the Year, becoming the second Rocket to earn the league’s top honor. Brad Heaven was selected the MAC Men’s Golfer of the Year on three occasions in 2002, 2003 and 2004.

A trio of Rockets — junior Otto Black (79-74-69-75), freshman Colin Joseph (76-77-70-74) and freshman Stephen Watts (73-73-80-71) — tied for 19th place at nine-over par 297. Senior Pat Cermak tied for 26th place at 12-over par 300 (73-78-78-71).

Black also was honored in the post-event awards ceremony, as he joined Selfridge on the first-team All-MAC squad. Selfridge was tabbed first-team All-MAC for the third-straight year, while Black earned first-team accolades for the first time after being selected second-team all-conference the previous two years.

Selfridge also became only the third player in school history to garner first-team all-league recognition on three occasions, joining Ted Ossoff (1973, 1974, 1975) and Heaven (2001, 2002, 2003, 2004).

In addition, Selfridge was named the MAC Male Scholar-Athlete of the Week by the league office May 6. it is the first time the interdisciplinary studies major with a 3.368 grade-point average has received the honor.
