Authors to visit UTMC, discuss culture change
By Meghan Cunningham : June 25th, 2010John Nance, author of Why Hospitals Should Fly: The Ultimate Flight Plan to Patient Safety and Quality Care, and Kathleen Bartholomew, author of Ending Nurse to Nurse Hostility: Why Nurses Eat Their Young and Each Other, will host a “Flight Plan to Culture Change at UTMC” event on Health Science Campus next week.
The authors will give presentations and seminars for UT faculty, staff, medical students and residents Monday, June 28, and Tuesday, June 29. The program will begin with a presentation Monday evening to medical students and continue with presentations throughout Tuesday.
Nance’s interesting approach to draw similarities between hospitals and airplanes has served as a relevant way to outline barriers to better practices in hospitals.
And Bartholomew has explored addressing communication issues in the nursing field — both between physicians and nurses and nurses with each other — that contribute to a hostile work environment.
“John Nance has been an advocate for patient safety and quality care in hospitals, and Karen Bartholomew has had a positive impact on the nursing profession as a champion for better communication,” said Dr. Jeffrey P. Gold, chancellor and executive vice president for biosciences and health affairs and dean of the College of Medicine. “The insight from these two accomplished authors can help inspire our team to look at health care in new ways as we strive to continually improve and provide the best care possible.”The schedule for “Flight Plan to Culture Change at UTMC” is:
