This year, representatives traveled from Women’s Resource Center at Eastern Michigan University, Center for the Education of Women at the University of Michigan, the Women’s Center at Bowling Green State University, Women’s Center: Kent State University and the Women’s Center at Lakeland Community College.

“This was an excellent opportunity to meet and bring centers together to discuss best practices,” said Dr. Shanda Gore, UT associate vice president for equity, diversity and community engagement. “Ideas about initiatives to improve our outreach and support for our students make a great impact on culture and retention.”

Centers reported successes such as Lakeland’s SMART program: Single Mothers Achieving Real Triumph, BGSU’s “Keep It Flowing” campaign for feminine hygiene products for women in need, and EMU’s Intersection Series, a monthly program that discusses how gender and other dimensions of diversity interact.

In addition, UM’s 50th anniversary in 2014, UT’s Women Success Series and professional clothing available via Kate’s Closet, and Kent’s Sexual and Relationship Violence Support Services also were shared.

Lauri Cooper, UT associate vice president and senior legal counsel, and Katrin McBroom, law clerk, also presented on the White House Task Force to Protect Students From Sexual Assault, also known as the “Not Alone” campaign.

The women’s centers plan to meet in 2015 at Eastern Michigan University.
