From partaking in scavenger hunts, dissecting owl pellets, and building water cycles to collecting insects and sampling a pond, Nature of Maumee Bay Lake Erie Center Science Program attendees engage in hands-on learning at The University of Toledo’s Lake Erie Center.

“I think it’s good that the kids get some science content to keep them fresh over the summer, but we try to make it in a fun and exciting manner,” said Rachel Lohner, UT Lake Erie Center education program manager. “We don’t use textbooks; we do it a little differently than hopefully during the school year and actually get them outside experiencing things from a hands-on perspective.

“We hope to spur their interest and maybe steer them into science, technology, engineering or math careers in the future,” she said.

The one-day mini-camp will take place Tuesday, Aug. 5, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.

“I think we have a cutting-edge research center that we’re able to use as our home base. The kids are actually able to go through the labs and interact with the researchers. We bring in graduate students to lead activities, and the kids get to see some real science in action,” Lohner said.

The cost is $40 ($35 for Lake Erie Center members).

Scholarships and sibling discounts are available; class size is limited.
