The UT College of Pharmacy will break ground for its new $25 million facility Friday, Sept. 11, at 11:30 a.m. between the Block Health Science Building and the Health Education Building on Health Science Campus.

Set to open its doors in fall 2010, the building will include laboratories, lecture halls and offices to provide more space for the College of Pharmacy and offer students hands-on experience in an integrated medical community.

Students, faculty, alumni and community members will be at the groundbreaking to celebrate the college’s expansion and the construction of a new facility that is central to classrooms, clinics, Mulford Library and UT Medical Center.

The two-story building, featuring modern professional development amenities and state-of-the-art laboratory space, will offer UT students the latest technology and practice facilities. A 500-seat auditorium also is being constructed in the Collier Building to accommodate large lecture classes.

The new facility, in conjunction with Wolfe Hall on Main Campus, will accommodate the college’s growing enrollment of nearly 1,500 students, up 75 percent since 2001.

Dr. Johnnie Early, dean of the College of Pharmacy, said the expansion is a natural extension of the college’s research and academic partnerships on UT’s Health Science Campus, and it will enhance current collaborations in the fields of cancer and diabetes treatment, immunology and transplantation, and neurodegenerative disorders.

“The new facilities will improve the human condition by creating the rare opportunity of occupying two modern facilities and offering state-of-the-art infrastructure for teaching and research in pharmacy, the pharmaceutical sciences and patient care,” Early said.

According to Dr. Jeffrey P. Gold, Health Science Campus provost, executive vice president for health affairs and dean of the College of Medicine, “The construction of this new facility will create great synergy in the education, research and clinical care programs of all of the UT health science programs. Sharing classrooms, laboratories, libraries and student centers will promote collaboration and enhanced mutual respect. The opportunities are truly without limit to improve the human condition.”

All members of the UT and Toledo communities are invited to join the College of Pharmacy for the groundbreaking celebration.
