Former Rocket signs with Gran Canaria 2014 Canarias in Spanish league

Former Rocket Brenae Harris will get the chance to continue her basketball career by recently signing with Gran Canaria 2014 Canarias.

Harris becomes the fifth UT women’s basketball player to play professionally under three-time Mid-American Conference Coach of the Year Tricia Cullop, joining Melissa Goodall (Italy and Spain), Naama Shafir (Israel), Andola Dortch (Belarus) and most recently Inma Zanoguera (Italy) on that list.

Gran Canaria 2014 Canarias is a professional basketball club based in Las Palmas, Spain, and plays in the first-division professional Spanish League.

This past season, Harris tallied a team-high 14.8 points, 5.1 rebounds, a squad-best 5.2 assists, 0.5 blocks and 1.1 steals in a league-high 36.8 minutes per game. She ranked first in the Mid-American Conference in minutes played, second in free-throw percentage (.869, 126 of 145) and helpers, eighth in assist/turnover ratio (1.7, 155-93), ninth in scoring, and 15th in defensive caroms (4.2 rebounds per game), en route to earning first-team all-league recognition.

The Marion, Ohio, native scored at least 20 points on eight occasions during her final year wearing the midnight blue and gold, including a career-high 39 points vs. Columbia in the first round of the Arizona State University Classic, tied for third most in school history. Harris also became the first Rocket to score at least 35 points in a game since Shafir poured in 40 against USC in the championship contest of the 2011 Postseason WNIT.

A 2015-16 team captain and Academic All-MAC selection, Harris led the Rockets in dimes a squad-best 22 times, scoring on a team-high 12 occasions, thefts 11 times, rejections on a squad-best 10 occasions, and rebounding seven times.
