The Office of Diversity and Inclusion and the Office of Multicultural Student Success will host a panel discussion Wednesday, Sept. 13, to provide students with information about proposed changes to the national Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) program.
The free, public event will take place at 7 p.m. in the Driscoll Alumni Center Auditorium.
“Many of our students are understandably shaken and uncertain about their futures in light of President [Donald] Trump’s order to end DACA,” said Dr. Willie McKether, UT vice president for diversity and inclusion. “We’re meeting with students in a secure forum where they can ask questions about what this move means for them, and so they can access accurate information.”
University administrators and immigration law experts will provide clarifying information and answer questions. Panelists include UT Police Chief Jeff Newton; Peter Thomas, UT director of international partnership and immigration; Toledo Mayor Paula Hicks-Hudson; and Eugenio Mollo Jr., adjunct professor in the UT College of Law and managing attorney of Toledo’s Agricultural Worker and Immigrant Rights Practice Group at Advocates for Basic Legal Equality.
“We encourage all of our students to attend this program,” said Dr. Michele Soliz, assistant vice president for student success and inclusion. “Although DACA doesn’t affect every UT student, our community as a whole is significantly impacted.”
Attendees will learn more about the future of DACA and how to connect with resources available to those with ongoing concerns.
