Mechanical engineering professor elected Fellow of premier organization

Fatemi, who has been at UT 23 years, is internationally recognized for his work as a researcher in fatigue and fracture of engineering materials and structures and for his role as an educator.
“I was thrilled to hear I was elected,” Fatemi said, adding that his nomination was based on his teaching and research contributions. “I believe that much of the credit goes to my graduate students over the past 20 years because of the quality of their work assisting me in research.”
To be elected a Fellow, one first must be nominated. The qualifications for a nominee include 10 years of active practice in the engineering field, 10 years as an active member of ASME, and significant achievements in the nominee’s area of research.
Fatemi has published more than 130 referred articles, with more than 1,000 citations to his publications.
He was invited to give a plenary lecture at the Ninth International Conference on Multiaxial Fatigue and Fracture in June in Parma, Italy. Fatemi also was a keynote speaker at the Eighth International Conference on Fatigue Damage of Structural Materials in September in Hyannis, Mass.
Fatemi has directed dissertations of 15 PhD students and theses of 27 graduate students. In 2002, he was the recipient of the UT Outstanding Faculty Research Award and in 2008 the Sigma Xi/Dion Raftopoulos Award for Outstanding Research.
“Election to the prestigious grade of Fellow signifies outstanding, high-impact contributions by a member of a technical society. Only about 3 percent of the ASME members are awarded this special honor,” said Dr. Nagi Naganathan, dean of the UT College of Engineering. “We are certainly very proud of what Dr. Fatemi has accomplished as a researcher and educator, as well as what he has done for the University and the professional community at large.”
