Anything for love: ‘Coronado’ to count the ways
    By Shannon Wermer
    Oct 9, 2008

Kristopher Parker, Mike Osowik and Halina La Riccia rehearse a scene from “Coronado” as Will, Hal and Gina, respectively.
The University of Toledo Department of Theatre and Film will perform Dennis Lehane’s “Coronado” Friday through Sunday, Oct. 10-12, and Thursday through Sunday, Oct. 23-26, in the Center for Performing Arts Studio Theatre on Main Campus.

The play is essentially a study of the lengths some people will go to for love — from lies to murder. Best known as the writer of the screenplay for “Mystic River,” Lehane wrote “Coronado” in 2006.

Jeannette Turner, a UT student majoring in theatre, will direct the production. She won the Best Director Award for 10-minute plays at the Kennedy Center American College Theatre Festival Region III in January.

“Directing the play allowed me to realize just how much of a collaborative effort theatre is, seeing it from beyond my past actor's perception that usually only involved the actor and director relationship,” Turner said. “My encounters changed significantly, now including interaction with a set designer, light designer, sound designer, costume designer, producer, actors and many more.”

Jason Santel and Elif Ertuck play the doctor and the patient, respectively, in “Coronado.”
According to Turner, each talented cast member brings something unique to the stage, creating a variety of intriguing characters within the show. “The cast as a whole works beautifully together,” she said.

The audience should expect to see a production about love, obsession, regret and murder, creatively and humorously delivered in a puzzle-like fashion similar to the drama and mystery show “Cold Case,” she said.

UT students star in “Coronado.” Halina LaRiccia and Kristopher Parker play Gina and Will, whose illicit affair leads to a pregnancy and murder. Bobby and Gwen are two young lovers portrayed by Ryan Dressel and Megan Smith; their relationship is overshadowed by Bobby’s father, a cold and aggressive career criminal intent on dragging his son into his footsteps. Brad Arner plays the father.

Curtain time will be 7:30 p.m. for all performances except for matinees on Sunday at 2 p.m.

Tickets are $13; $11 for faculty, staff, alumni and seniors; and $9 for students. They can be purchased online at www.utoledo.edu/boxoffice, at the box office prior to the shows or by calling 419.530.2375.
