On Sept. 12 and 26 and Oct. 17, the department of theatre and film is presenting the Arab Film Festival. On the selected Friday nights, the festival will present classic works of Arab cinema at 7:30 p.m. in the Center for Performing Arts Lab Theatre.
“A Door in the Sky” (Morocco, 1989) directed by Farida Ben Lyazid will be shown Friday, Sept. 12. This North African film addresses the social and economic changes as a Muslim woman strives to preserve her cultural and religious identity.
On Friday, Sept. 26, “The Broken Wings” (Lebanon, 1972) will be shown. Youself Malouf directed this film based on Kahlil Gibran’s autobiographical story of his first love and the social conventions that separated them.
The festival concludes on Friday, Oct. 17, with “The Dupes” (Syria, 1972). Set in Iraq in the 1950s, Tewfik Saleh’s film presents the story of three Palestinian refugees seeking better lives in a neighboring county. The movie is based on Ghassan Kanafani’s 1962 novel, Men in the Sun.
The festival is open to the public, but limited seating is available. A donation of $3 is suggested at the door.
