Art Tatum Scholarship Concert Slated for Feb. 10
    By Tobin J. Klinger
    Feb 4, 2002

The University of Toledo’s department of music and dance, the Toledo Jazz Society and local arts supporter Dorothy Price will host the 11th annual Art Tatum Scholarship Concert, Sunday, Feb. 10, at 3 p.m. in the UT Center for Performing Arts Recital Hall.

The concert will feature pianist Steven Mayer performing classical selections in the standard concert repertoire, as well as a tribute to jazz legend and Toledo native Art Tatum.

Mayer has been recognized as one of the most versatile performers on the music scene, and many of his recordings have garnered rave reviews. In fact The Washington Post (7/17/94) called Mayer’s 1994 release, Steven Mayer Plays Art Tatum, “…a brilliant tribute from one pianist to another.”

In addition to his concert appearance, Mayer will conduct a piano performance master class on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 1 to 3 p.m. in the Center for Performing Arts Recital Hall. During this free, public event, the audience will have the opportunity to experience and learn the techniques of this accomplished musician.

Since its creation in 1992, the benefit concert has raised more than $14,000 for the Art Tatum Scholarship Fund. The scholarship is awarded annually to one or two African-America students in The University of Toledo music and dance department who show promise of being an excellent performer and maintain a 3.0 grade point average.

Tickets for the concert are $20 for the public and $5 for students.

For more information on the performance, the master class or the Art Tatum Scholarship Fund, contact UT’s department of music and dance at 419.530.2448 or Jori Lynch Jex, Toledo Jazz Society executive director, at 419.241.2599.
