    Artist Captures Observations Through Drawing
    By Deanna Lytle
    Sep 23, 2002

    “Jody”
Charcoal and pencil drawings dot the halls and rooms of the Catharine S. Eberly Center for Women. Faces stare out from the pictures, some peaceful, others set and stern. This is an exhibit of drawings by artist Michelle Feeley.

Feeley, who graduated from The University of Toledo in May with a bachelor of fine arts degree, had never considered exhibiting her artwork until Diana Attie, professor of art, suggested it. "She offered me the opportunity, so I decided to take it."

"Drawings: An Internal Landscape," which is composed of pencil and charcoal drawings of people and objects, represents Feeley’s effort to bring her discoveries and observations about her subjects to paper. "I look at things that are interesting to me and emphasize them in the drawings," she explained. "I see myself as an observer."

Feeley became interested in art during high school and attended an art and design school before coming to UT. She decided to study at the University when she went to one of Attie’s art exhibits and was inspired by what she saw.

    “Corporate Life”
Feeley chose a variety of subjects for the drawings in her exhibit. Although she doesn’t know any of the people directly, she tried to bring out their personalities in the artwork. In "Corporate Life," for example, Feeley tried to capture the lifestyle of business people. "I wanted to portray the stance and the ego you have to have in the corporate world," she said.

Since graduation, Feeley has moved to Cleveland and plans to continue her art education. "I’d like to go to graduate school and go further with the figurative scene." Feeley says her ultimate goal is to be able to paint a portrait someday.

"Drawings: An Internal Landscape" is on display through Friday, Sept. 27, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at the Catharine S. Eberly Center for Women.
