    Artist Magnifies Nature in Works
    By Megan Mangano
    Nov 4, 2003

    "Belladonn II" by Karen Guenette
“A Closer Look,” an exhibit by award-winning photographer Karen Guenette, is on display in the Catharine S. Eberly Center for Women.

In a poem included in the exhibit, she cites the inspiration for her artwork as the environment. “Society has moved away from nature. We have alienated ourselves, and I realize it is important for me to stay connected,” said Guenette, who is a technician in the photography lab in the UT art department.

Her images are obtained by physically moving closer to objects. “The extremely shallow depth of field creates abstract images that individuals naturally interpret,” Guenette said. “My idea is to have people see themselves with their imagination so they recognize themselves in the photographs.”

Guenette wants her images to reflect the lives of the people who are viewing them. “I want to intrigue individuals to look closer at all the natural things that surround them,” she said. “A connection with nature can be very spiritual.”

The free, public exhibit is on display until Thursday, Nov. 6, from 8:30 a.m. until 5 p.m.

For more information on the exhibit, call the Center for Women at 419.530.8570.
