Yes, there are live ants on display at the Center for the Visual Arts Gallery. It’s part of “On Common Ground,” an exhibition featuring Cincinnati artist Shawna Guip’s detailed drawings and map-like paintings inspired by the insects.
The works are part of a yearlong project funded by a grant from the Ohio Arts Council. The exhibit debuted at the SS NOVA in Cincinnati.

“The ant colony seen here [at the CVA] was one of four interconnected populations that were enabled to intermingle at the time of the opening after existing for an extended period of time in isolation,” Guip said. “The relationship between limited resources and conflict was elucidated in the violent behavior that resulted from the opportunity to expand beyond an area of confinement.”
Three species of ants were in the original installation, and each colony was given identical resources, Guip said. “Those presented in this exhibit were victorious.”
“On Common Ground” can be seen through Friday, Aug. 15. Gallery hours are 8 a.m. to midnight.
