The 2001 Bluestem Poetry Award winner Cheryl Lachowski will read selections from her book titled Homing on Thursday, Nov. 7, in Carlson Library at 3 p.m.
Homing explores a return to origins and contains poems of discovery. Poet Christopher Howell has described Homing as “a work of deep feeling and of a precision unusual in first books of poems.”
Each year, both established and undiscovered poets enter their works in the Bluestem Poetry Contest. A poet of national distinction acts as the final judge. Howell served as the first judge when the contest began in 1989, and also served as the 2001 judge who selected Lachowski’s work.
Lachowski graduated from Bowling Green State University with a master of fine arts degree. She has taught both literature and writing courses at BGSU, Kutztown University in Kutztown, Pa., and Luther College in Decorah, Iowa.
“Poetry is similar to the way we think, using images, sights and sounds,” said Dr. Rane Arroyo, director of creative writing at UT. “It gives us a sense of the world in ways that news stories and facts cannot express. It’s exciting for a young author such as Cheryl Lachowski to find a voice and an audience.”
Lachowski’s visit is part of the English department’s Visiting Poets Series.
