Bengali Theater to be Discussed at Forum |

In honor of “A Global Celebration of the Arts” 2003-04 season, the UT department of theatre and film will present a special forum on “The Predicament of Emerging Voices in Indian Bengali Theater” on Tuesday, Dec. 9, at 4 p.m. in the Center for Performing Arts Center Theatre. The keynote speakers will be Dr. Sudipto Chatterjee and Suman Mukherjee.
Chatterjee is an assistant professor of Asian performance at the University of California at Berkeley. He is the author of 14 plays and translations in Bengali and English. In 1999, he was awarded the New York Drama Circle Award of Distinction for translation and direction of “Nuraldeen’s Lifetime,” a bilingual production in Bengali and English. He is also a performer and a filmmaker.
Mukherjee is a UT visiting assistant professor of theatre from Kolkata, India. He also is the director of the Sanskrit play, “The Little Clay Cart,” running from Dec. 9 to 13 in the Center for Performing Arts Center Theatre. His theater company, Chetana, is based in Kolkata and is dedicated to fostering cultural exchange and international understanding in the area of theater and performing arts.
Those attending the forum will receive a coupon good for a discounted ticket to “The Little Clay Cart” performance at 7:30 p.m. A discussion led by Chatterjee and Mukherjee will follow the play.
Both events are co-sponsored by the departments of theatre and film and women’s and gender studies.
