Broadway star, singers to perform as part of Vocal Arts Series
    By Angela Riddel
    Jan 11, 2008

    Nix
The University of Toledo Department of Music will welcome four accomplished singers to its Vocal Arts Series during January.

Each vocalist will provide a master class for students, as well as a free, public recital in the Center for Performing Arts Recital Hall on Main Campus.

John and Catherine Nix, a tenor and soprano, respectively, will be the first artists in the series. They will offer a recital Friday, Jan. 11, at 8 p.m., and they will hold a master class Saturday, Jan. 12, from 10:30 a.m. until 1 p.m.

    Nix
John Nix is an associate professor of voice and vocal pedagogy at the University of Texas at San Antonio, where he has created a Voice Research Laboratory. He has been awarded several research grants, including two from the National Research Institute, and his work has been published in Vocalese and The Opera Journal.

Catherine Nix has presented recitals and master classes in universities across the country. Her operatic credits include Susanna in “The Marriage of Figaro,” Gretel in “Hansel and Gretel” and Angelina in “Trial by Jury.” She teaches applied voice at the University of Texas at San Antonio.

    Marszalkowski
Soprano Michele Marszalkowski will provide a master class Friday, Jan. 18, from 2 to 5 p.m. and a recital Sunday, Jan. 20 at 3 p.m. She received the bachelor of music degree from Wayne State University in 1994 and a master of music degree in vocal performance from The University of Toledo in 1998. She studied with Barbara Rondelli-Perry, UT professor of music. Marszalkowski is a featured soloist of the internationally award-winning Detroit Concert Choir and an adjunct professor of voice at Macomb Community College. The UT alumna toured with I Solisti Cantori in England, Scotland and Wales in a Viva Verdi celebration, singing in the opera houses of Rome, Cosenza, Lucca and Lecce.

    Shew
Toledo’s own Tim Shew, internationally known Broadway performer, will come to UT Friday, Jan. 25. The tenor will perform, talk with the audience, and coach student singers. The public is invited to this free event, which will be held from 1 to 4 p.m.

Shew is an American Music Theatre master who has performed on Broadway in productions such as the Bernstein/Comden and Green Broadway production of “Wonderful Town,” and he starred as Jean Valjean in the Tony Award-winning “Les Miserables.” He made his film debut in the movie musical, “The Producers.” For 15 years, he has produced “Broadway Sings on Park Avenue,” a concert to benefit children affected by and infected with HIV and AIDS.
