Films that recently were hot topics in northwest Ohio will be shown during the sixth annual Censorship Symposium Friday, March 31, and Saturday, April 1, in the Center for Performing Arts Room 1039.
The Academy Award-nominated “Twist of Faith” will be presented. The documentary was not screened at any local theater, but the theatre and film department showed it last October. The film follows a Toledo man as he comes to terms with sexual abuse that happened more than 20 years ago.
Pedro Almodovar’s film “Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down,” the NC-17-rated work at the center of a controversy in Defiance County, also will be shown. Megan Espen, an Ayersville High School teacher, is on unpaid leave after showing the film to her Spanish class. Following the screening, ACLU lawyer Jeff Gamso will lead a community discussion. He is one of the lawyers representing Espen in her criminal case.
The purpose of the symposium is to directly address contemporary issues in the areas of free speech, freedom of expression and censorship, according to Tammy Kinsey, UT assistant professor of film.
“Throughout the history of cinema, we see instances of controversy where some of the people who oppose the film haven’t actually seen the film,” Kinsey said. “I think that it’s really important to have an opportunity to experience these works for ourselves and then discuss them and their situation in our community.“
The schedule for the sixth annual Censorship Symposium is:
Friday, March 31
3 p.m. — “Video, Censorship and the Electronic Superhighway,” presentation by John Hendershot, UT film/video honors student, on the ways Internet communities have changed access to controversial materials.
7 p.m. — “Twist of Faith,” Kirby Dick, 2004, 87 minutes; panel discussion follows screening.
Saturday, April 1
6 p.m. — “Tie Me Up, Tie Me Down,” Pedro Almodovar, 1990, 101 minutes; discussion with ACLU lawyer follows screening.
A $3 donation is suggested at the door.
