Center for Women holding online art auction

The Catharine S. Eberly Center for Women is holding an online international art auction in coordination with its Legacy Courtyard Celebration, which will take place Monday, Sept. 10.

A majority of the artwork is Tanzanian batiks, pastels and ebony carvings, all donated by the Lake Erie Consortium, according to Kaye Conner, records management officer.

Batiks are produced on cotton canvas using dyes to create the artwork. Hot wax is brushed onto the canvas and then dipped into dye; the wax prevents the dye from setting into the fabric. The wax is removed and the process repeated to create colorful, elaborate pieces that depict landscapes, animals and village scenes, according to Conner.

Ebony carvings range from small 7.5-inch carvings to 40-inch carved chairs. These pieces, whether large or small, are time-consuming to create and very detailed, Conner said.

The auction also includes a couple Chinese rubbings and a woodcut donated by Dr. Patricia Murphy, former director of the Center for Women, and gift baskets donated by members of the center’s advisory board.

All proceeds from this auction will benefit the Center for Women. The center lost state funding for the Project Succeed program and relies on fund raising to offer the programs and services.

“Project Succeed helped women transition to and from the university environment and was a very valuable resource for women throughout the northwest Ohio region,” said Dr. Charlene Gilbert, center director. “The Legacy Courtyard is now the main fund raiser for Project Succeed since the 2005 state budget cuts.”

Online bidding can take place until 4 p.m. Sept. 10; from 4 to 6 p.m., a live silent auction will be held at the event.

The Legacy Courtyard Celebration will begin at 4 p.m. and last until 7 p.m. The event will include a welcome to the center’s new director, Gilbert; remarks from UT President Lloyd Jacobs and Dr. Rosemary Haggett, new Main Campus provost and executive vice president for academic affairs; and the awarding of scholarships and other honors.

The artwork is on display at the center until the auction has concluded and also may be seen here.
