Chamber music, jazz guitar concerts slated
    By Krista M. Hayes
    Mar 17, 2006

The University of Toledo’s department of music will host the 2006 Honors Chamber Music Recital Sunday, March 19, at 3 p.m. and a concert by the UT Jazz Guitar Ensemble Wednesday, March 22, at 8 p.m.

Both events will take place in the Center for Performing Arts Recital Hall.

The UT Honors Chamber Music Competition was established in 2004 to promote excellence in the performance of chamber music by UT students. The competition is open to all students enrolled in music classes at UT, and non-music majors are encouraged to enter. Repertoire choices for the competition are limited to classical chamber music written for three or more performers.

Selections from Schumann’s Quintet and Dvorak’s Quartet in E Flat Major will be performed by UT students. “Omphal Centric Lecture,” a work for percussion by Nigel Westlake, also will be performed under the direction of Rico McNeela, UT associate professor of music.

Judges for the 2006 competition will be Dr. Nina Assimakopoulos, flutist and Bowling Green State University assistant professor of music; Dr. Alan Smith, cellist and BGSU associate dean and professor of music; and James Wilhelmsen, pianist and director of the Clarkston Conservatory of Music, Clarkston, Mich.

Under the direction of Ed Levy, UT lecturer of music, the UT Jazz Guitar Ensemble will perform an arrangement of standard jazz tunes as well as original compositions. The concert will be a mixture of musical selections for the group with solos for individual members interspersed throughout the performance.

“The event will give students a chance to add some culture to their life, get away from studying for a moment, and have an hour or so of being pampered with live music,” said Dr. Bonnie Fleming, UT visiting assistant professor of music. “Free live performances are few and far between, and the college years are a great time to discover a love for watching live musical events of all kinds.”

For more information on the free, public performances, contact Fleming at 419.530.4549 or at bonnie.fleming@utoledo.edu.
