| Christmas Shopping" by a 14-year-old girl in Taiwan is one of several works on display in the "Christmas Around the World" exhibit at the Multicultural Student Center. |
Paints and crayons, pencils and markers, Santa and presents, nativities and families — these are just some of the elements in the “Christmas Around the World” exhibit at the Multicultural Student Center.
The show, in Student Union Room 2500, contains works from the International Collection of Child Art and runs until Thursday, Dec. 30. The collection began in 1969 and features more than 8,500 pieces of art by children in 50 different cultures and countries. Housed at the Milner Library at Illinois State University, it is a resource for scholars to research elements of children’s artwork.
The exhibit includes pieces from children in India, Turkey, Taiwan, the United States, Korea, South Africa, Italy and the Philippines that depict holiday scenes. One picture shows children and Santa Claus shopping for Christmas presents. Another piece contains angels flying around a church. There also are scenes of families getting together to open presents and sharing festive meals.
The free, public exhibit is open Monday through Friday from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. It will be closed, along with the rest of the University, on Dec. 23 and 24.
