Choreography by Instructors to Be Spotlighted
    By Vicki L. Kroll
    Nov 13, 2002

UT Dance Company members Emily Lewandowski, front, and Ashley Jackson perform in sight.
The UT Dance Company will step on stage for “In Response” on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 15-16, at 8 p.m. in Doermann Theater.

The fall performances will feature the choreography of UT dance instructors Melissa Beck, Jovita Weibel and Corinne Imberski.

Beck’s piece is titled “I Wander, They Wander” and is set to music composed by Angelo Badalamenti and Jurgen Knieper. Beck said the work explores the concept of self in relation to others. “The dance begins in isolation, and as the dancers become aware of the others around them, interactions occur,” Beck said. “First they are playful and accepting, then jealous and self-serving, and finally compassionate.”

Weibel’s “No!” analyzes the effects of war. “It’s a haunting solo that depicts a woman crying out in response to the injustice done to the innocent in times of war,” Weibel said.

Imberski will perform “No!” — which is a segment of a larger group work and danced to the music of Lisa Gerrard and Pieter Bourke.

Seven dancers will perform Imberski’s “When We Woke.” “This piece combines the surreal and rhythmic aspects of DJ Spooky’s music to create a powerful juxtaposition of dreamy, calm movement and forceful, aggressive and slightly chaotic movement,” Imberski said.

“‘When We Woke’ examines what happens when we are thrust into reality and become aware of the state of the world around us.”

Imberski will perform her latest solo creation, “Imminent.” Accompanying the instructor will be members of the University Orchestra who will play music from Edward Grieg’s “Peer Gynt.” “‘Imminent’ explores the feelings generated by inescapable fate,” Imberski said.

An encore performance of Imberski’s “in sight” will close the show. The number will feature seven members of the UT Dance Company and Bach’s sixth cello suite. “Blending slow and monumental movement with fast and athletic movement, ‘in sight’ offers a glimpse of what we see when we look inside ourselves and beyond,” Imberski said.

Tickets for “In Response” are $5 for general admission and $3 for students and seniors, and will be sold at the door.
