Creative Copper Work Featured in Exhibit
    By Megan Mangano
    Jan 28, 2003

    “Misunderstanding”
Congolese Artist Madame Sylvia Tshikunda Misakabu combines copper, fire and creativity in her artwork, which is on display at the Catharine S. Eberly Center for Women.

“We usually feature exhibits by the students, but in honor of Black History Month, we wanted to feature the works of Misakabu,” said Diane Early, interim director of the Center for Women.

The exhibit titled “Battuese de Cuivre” (“Art on Copper”) will be on display through February.

Misakabu has created her works by taking a sheet of copper and heating it over the open fire. Once the copper becomes red hot, she shapes the pieces by placing the sheets on a sandbag and pounding on them with a variety of mallets and other metal tools. She uses African symbolic representation in her work and incorporates the opinions of the viewer before finishing the project. While knowledge of African mythology is essential for understanding many of her works, the pieces still depict the reality of Congo life.

    “Mother Superior”
The exhibit features 12 pieces that are for sale, with prices ranging from $1,000 to $1,800. It runs Monday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in the Center for Women Gallery, located in Tucker Hall Room 168.

For more information on the free, public exhibit, call the Center for Women at 419.530.8570.
