The Society of Environmental Education (SEE) will hold its fourth annual EarthFest Environmental Poetry Contest and also is looking for performance pieces for an evening of entertainment honoring the planet.
Poetry will be judged on content and form and must be original and relate to some aspect of nature or environmental issues. A cash prize of $50 will be awarded to each winner in four categories: UT students, UT faculty, UT staff, and off-campus community 16 years and older.
The deadline to submit poems is Monday, April 14, by 5 p.m. Submissions must include name, category and phone number or e-mail address. Poems should be sent to: Dr. Linda Smith, University Honors Program, mail stop 504, Sullivan Hall Room 114, The University of Toledo, Toledo, OH 43606; faxed to Ext. 6032; or e-mailed to linda.smith@utoledo.edu.
Winners will read their works as part of the “Celebration of the Earth and Arts” on Tuesday, April 22, at 7 p.m. in the Law Center Auditorium.
The Society of Environmental Education also is seeking performance pieces for that event. Readings, musical and dance pieces are welcome. Send a detailed description to Smith at linda.smith@utoledo.edu by Wednesday, April 9. An informal presentation to the SEE EarthFest Committee may be required.
The student organization has other events planned for EarthFest, which will take place on Monday and Tuesday, April 21-22. A presentation about the environmental consequences of war, a symposium to spur fund-raising efforts for the United Nations Population Fund, and a letter and postcard writing campaign will take place to honor Earth Day, April 22.
For more information, call Smith at 419.530.6039.
