Three UT students pursuing degrees in music were prizewinners at local voice competitions this month.
Brittoney Roane, a sophomore pursing a degree in music education, won first prize in the Emerging Artists Vocal Competition, which was sponsored by the Toledo Club of the Negro Business and Professional Women’s Clubs. She will advance to the division competition in Ann Arbor in May.
Gabrielle Hill was awarded second prize in the competition; she is also a sophomore pursuing a degree in music education at UT.
Roane and Hill were required to sing an operatic aria and an oratorio aria, a French song, a German song, and a spiritual or art song by an African-American composer. Memorization was required for all five selections.
Kira Sullivan won fourth prize out of 17 singers who competed in the First-Year College Women category at the Ohio Buckeye Chapter of the National Association of Teachers of Singing Auditions held at Bowling Green State University.
Freshmen from colleges and universities throughout Ohio, including Ohio State, Cleveland Institute of Music, Baldwin-Wallace, Bowling Green State University, Miami University, Otterbein and the University of Akron, were present at the competition.
Sullivan is from California and is pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music and vocal performance at UT.
The talented students study with Barbara Rondelli Perry, UT professor of music.
Cherie Osswald, graduate assistant and master’s student in music education, was the pianist who accompanied the students.
