John J. Sweeney, national president of the American Federation of Labor-Congress of Industrial Organizations (AFL-CIO), will speak on "A Government of Laws, or a Government of Men?" on Tuesday, Sept. 24, at 12:30 p.m. in The University of Toledo Law Center Auditorium.
Sweeney’s appearance will mark the second in a series of labor law lectures hosted by the College of Law. Richard Trumka, secretary-treasurer of the AFL-CIO, was the first lecturer when the series began in March.
Phillip J. Closius, dean of the College of Law, noted, “Toledo has long been one of the most highly unionized areas in the nation, and labor relations and labor law has long been central to our community. Sweeney’s visit is the continuation of the College of Law’s lecture series in recognition of the city’s historic relationship with the union movement and labor law.”
Sweeney was first elected as president of the AFL-CIO in 1995 and is in the middle of his third term. In May 2000, Sweeney was also elected president of the Trade Union Advisory Committee, an international organization with consultative status at the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development.
In 1996, he authored America Needs A Raise, Fighting for Economic Security and Social Justice, published by Houghton-Mifflin. He also co-authored Solutions for the New Work Force in 1989 and co-edited the UNA-USA Economic Policy Council’s Family and Work: Bridging the Gap in 1987.
Sweeney holds a bachelor’s degree in economics from Iona College in New Rochelle, N.Y., and has honorary degrees from Oberlin College, Ohio, the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, the University of Baltimore, and Catholic University of America, Washington, D.C.
