The queen and king of fairies, the mischievous Puck and romantic high jinks await you at a reading of William Shakespeare's "A Midsummer Night's Dream" at the Stranahan Arboretum at 8 p.m. on Sunday, June 20.
The reading is directed by Charles Vicinus, University of Toledo professor emeritus of theatre, and features a cast of veteran actors performing an abridged script of the play to coincide with midsummer's eve — the longest day of the year.
The performance is the first in the Stranahan Arboretum's Summer Arts Series. According to Joel Lipman, director of the arboretum and UT professor of art and English, plans are in the works to bring art installations, music and dance to the arboretum during the season.
The reading will take place in an arbor of birches, simulating the forest setting of the Shakespearean piece. "The play lends itself well to the arboretum," Lipman said. "It's also a low-key alternative to the Toledo Jazz Festival, which is winding up that day."
Attendees should bring blankets or folding chairs for seating to the weather-permitting performance. Copies of the play will be distributed so the audience can follow along.
The reading is open to the public; a $5 donation is requested.
The Stranahan Arboretum is located at 4131 Tantara Drive at the corner of Sylvania Avenue and Corey Road. Attendees are asked to park along Tantara Drive.
