On Friday, April 15, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., Dr. Thomas J. Grites, assistant to the provost at Richard Stockton College, Pomona, N.J., will speak about “Realizing Student and Institutional Success Through Academic Advising” in the Student Recreation Center Maple Room.
The event is part of UT’s “Year of the Adviser” celebration.
Grites has served as a consultant and faculty development workshop leader to more than 100 campuses. He is the author of Academic Advising: Getting Us Through the Eighties (1979) and co-author of Developmental Academic Advising (1984). Grites also has written more than 50 journal articles, position statements, book chapters and consultant reports.
“The Year of the Adviser was announced through the Provost’s Office as an area within the University to highlight as one of value to the University and its students, faculty and staff,” said Dr. Ellen Nagy, UT director of career services. “The Provost’s Office designated advising [because it] is important to student success and they wanted to raise its visibility.”
Three awards will be given Thursday, May 5, at 3 p.m. in the Student Union. They are Master Adviser, Adviser Service Award and Pacesetter, the first two for advisers and the latter in recognition of individuals who are not academic advisers but whose actions support the mission of advising at UT.
For more information on the free, public lecture, contact Nagy at 419.530.4341 or ellen.nagy@utoledo.edu.
