All-American Blood Drive Drops by UT
    By Deanna Lytle
    Jun 16, 2004

Maria Villagomez, UT data systems coordinator in Institutional Research, gave blood on campus June 7 with the help of phlebotomist Tina Williams of the American Red Cross. Several drives are held on campus during the year to help supply blood to area hospitals.
The American Red Cross's 9th Annual All-American Blood Drive Campaign kicks off at The University of Toledo on Friday, June 25, and Saturday, June 26.

Rocket Hall is the site of the drive, which lasts from 7 a.m. until 6 p.m. on Friday and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday. Sponsors of the event include WTVG-TV Ch. 13, UT and Kroger.

"Over the Fourth of July holiday we typically struggle to maintain an adequate blood supply, so we truly appreciate the willingness of WTVG, Kroger and UT to help out in this time of critical need," said Kathy Smith, Red Cross Western Lake Erie Blood Services director.

Muddy the Mud Hen will be on hand to greet donors, who will be entered in a raffle to win tickets to a Toledo Mud Hens game. Donors also will receive a coupon for $1 off the admission to the Crosby Festival of the Arts at Toledo Botanical Gardens, a T-shirt and apple pie.

To give blood, a person must be at least 17 years old and weigh at least 110 pounds. A person must be in good general health and feel well on the day of donation. Those who have given blood within the past 56 days are ineligible to donate. An I.D. is required for donation.

The entire process, from registration to completion, lasts 60 minutes. HIV and other transmissible diseases cannot be contracted through blood donation, according to American Red Cross Blood Services officials.

People also can donate for the All-American Blood Drive until July 10 at the Red Cross Donor Center located at 3510 Executive Parkway.

Walk-ins are welcome, but you can schedule an appointment by calling 419.539.1009 or 1.800.GIVE.LIFE.
