Alternative Energy Systems Partnership to Review First Year
    By Gina Calcamuggio
    Nov 23, 2003

In October 2002, U.S. Congresswoman Marcy Kaptur announced that a $600,000 competitive grant from the National Science Foundation would help fund a collaborative research effort between The University of Toledo, Bowling Green State University, Owens Community College and numerous other government and industry partners. The focus of this partnership — alternative energy systems.

Kaptur will be on hand again, along with some 100 other public and private sector representatives, to review highlights and accomplishments from the first year of this collaborative research effort known as the Northwest Ohio Partnership on Alternative Energy Systems. The progress report will take place on Monday, Nov. 24, from 8:30 a.m. to 3 p.m. in Student Union Rooms 2582 and 2584.

The Northwest Ohio Partnership on Alternative Energy Systems brings together university researchers working on photovoltaics, hydrogen generation from photovoltaic systems, fuel cells and electricity management for electric vehicles with industry, government and development organizations to help Toledo emerge as a national center in the development of alternative energy technologies.

“The progress made in such a short period of time in defining Toledo as a place recognized for its research, production and adoption of alternative energy technologies is a true testimony of the collaboration and shared vision by our faculty and other academic, industrial, nonprofit and governmental collaborators,” said Dr. Frank Calzonetti, vice provost for research, graduate education and economic development. “The University is now recognized as a national leader in this increasingly competitive arena, and we expect to see this new knowledge play a growing important role in the local economy."

In addition to Kaptur, other presenters for the meeting include Dr. Tom Surek, photovoltaics program manager at the National Renewable Energy Laboratory, and Tom Maves and Elaine Barnes of the Ohio Department of Development Office of Energy Efficiency.
