William R. McClure, retail real estate expert and 1982 UT graduate, will come back to his alma mater to talk about his experiences on Friday, Sept. 19, at 10 a.m. in the Scott Park Student Center Auditorium.
McClure, University College’s visiting executive, will discuss “Opportunities in Real Estate Featuring Marketing, Management and Technology.”
“The theme of my talk will be turning failure into success,” McClure said. “I also will attempt to spark an interest in the shopping center industry with students who may be undecided in their career path.”
McClure attended UT from 1975 to 1977, dropped out and returned home to Youngstown. “Two years working in a steel factory made me see that the only way to change my bleak financial condition was to go back to college,” he said.
In 1980, he moved back to Toledo and enrolled in University College. After receiving a bachelor of science degree in business services, McClure headed south to join Robinson Brothers in Bradenton, Fla. In 1986, he returned to Youngstown and was hired by the Edward J. DeBartolo Corp., one of the leading shopping center developers in the world. Five years later, McClure was assigned to the leasing department, where he made a name for himself creating, negotiating and implementing business opportunities for retailers in less-than-desirable properties.
He returned to the Sunshine State in 1996 and worked in Fort Lauderdale and Miami before joining Talisman Companies in 1999. The boutique retail real estate development firm has properties in Atlanta, Baltimore, Las Vegas, Minneapolis, Miami, and Knoxville, Tenn.
