American-Muslim family and domestic violence workshop to be held
    By Stacy Moeller
    May 30, 2006

A cultural competency workshop on the dynamics of the American-Muslim family and domestic violence issues will be held Thursday, June 1, at The University of Toledo.

Dr. Fatima Al-Hayani, cultural competency expert for the Lucas County Job and Family Services Muslim Family and Domestic Violence Project, will run the workshop.

“The workshop is being held because there is an emerging need in our community for social services providers to have a better understanding of the American-Islamic family values in regard to domestic violence,” said Dr. Patricia Murphy, interim director of the Catharine S. Eberly Center for Women. “It’s also to counteract the idea that the Quran or sunnas ‘sayings of the Prophet’ can be used to justify violence against women or violence in the home.”

The free, public workshop will be held from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. in the University Counseling Center, located in Armory Center Room 1300.

The event is co-sponsored by the Catharine S. Eberly Center for Women and the Student Medical Center.

For more information, call the UT Student Medical Center at 419.530.3451.
