American Heart Walk Meeting Slated for Feb. 18
    By Vicki L. Kroll
    Feb 18, 2003

Dreaming of spring? Make plans to be part of the 11th annual American Heart Walk on campus in May.

Students, staff and faculty are invited to the UT American Heart Walk Kick-Off Meeting on Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 8 p.m. in the Student Union T-Section.

“Since February is National Heart Month, we thought it was a good time to start planning our strategies," said Sandi Noviks, a junior majoring in communication who is the logistics/special events chair for the UT walk. “The steering committee has been presenting at organizational meetings and posting flyers all over campus. There will be free food and many incentive prizes, not only at the informational meetings, but at the walk itself. This walk has so many fantastic opportunities in so many different aspects. I hope that everyone can make the most of it!"

She added this is the first year walkers will be able to register online. "This will increase convenience to the walkers and their sponsors as well as save a lot of paper and office work." Click here here to register online.

Volunteers and walkers are needed for the 3.1-mile walk, which will take place on Saturday, May 3, at Carter Field. The event raises funds for the American Heart Association; the voluntary health agency is dedicated to fighting the No. 1 leading cause of death in the country — heart disease.

Nearly 2,000 people in Lucas County die from cardiovascular disease each year, according to Nicole King of the American Heart Association Lucas County Division. Money raised from the walk is used to fund cardiovascular research efforts at UT and the Medical College of Ohio, King said.

Students who wish to volunteer or sign up may contact Noviks at 419.535.1874 or e-mail utheartwalk@hotmail.com. Faculty and staff who wish to volunteer or sign up for the walk should call Deb Driscoll, senior coordinator for community relations, at 419.530.5317 or e-mail Debra.Driscoll@utoledo.edu.
