Come celebrate Diwali: The Festival of Lights on Saturday, Nov. 20, at 6:30 p.m. in the Student Union Auditorium.
The program is sponsored by the Indian Students Cultural Organization (ISCO) and will feature food and cultural events.
Diwali is an Indian festival celebrated with the exchange of sweets, watching fireworks and lighting diyas. A diya is a small lamp made of clay. People use oil or ghee for fuel and cotton for the wick. In different areas of India, the festival honors or commemorates different things. In northern India, for example, Diwali honors Rama’s homecoming after the defeat of the evil Ravana and Rama’s coronation. In other parts of the country, people honor the goddesses Lakshmi and Kali.
Tickets for the event are $6 for ISCO members and $14 for non-members. They are available from any ISCO panel member; the Office of International Student Services in Student Union Room 1533; Krishna Groceries, 3305 N. Holland Sylvania Road; and Reddy Food-N-Spices, 6725 W. Central Ave.
For more information, contact ISCO members Monil Shah at 419.320.3599 or Parag Nimse at 419.320.2947
