On Friday, Feb. 10, and Saturday, Feb. 11, the "v-word" will be spoken without trepidation. The annual performances of "Vagina Monologues" by Eve Ensler will be held at 7 p.m. each night in the Scott Park Auditorium.
The event, put on by UT students, benefits the University's Sexual Assault Education and Prevention Program and is part of V-Day, an international event to raise money and awareness for anti-violence groups.
"The subject is vaginas, but it's more about women finding their own empowerment," Lesley Wright, student organizer and actor, said of the play. "And a lot of it is to bring awareness of violence against women — not just in the United States, but also in the world."
The UT production is basic — actors reading from scripts against a plain backdrop. "It's just letting the monologues speak for themselves," Wright said, adding that the monologue rotation varies slightly each year.
Tickets are $5 for students and $10 for general admission. They are on sale at Rocket Copy in the Student Union and at People Called Women, 3153 W. Central Ave. Tickets also can be purchased before each show.
Doors open at 6:30 p.m., and local organizations will have informational booths set up outside the auditorium.
For more information on the performances, contact the Sexual Assault Education and Prevention Program at 419.530.3432.
