The University will hold several camps this summer, ranging from a children’s Summer Day Camp to a Pharmacy Camp for high school students. The camps will be held throughout the summer and will require students to register in advance.
The camps are:
1- Summer Day Camp 2002—The UT Student Recreation Center will hold a series of six camps this summer, the camps are for children ages 5 to 12 and will include daily swimming, games, art projects, stories and weekly field trips. Cost will be $110 per child per week. For information on this year’s dates and themes, along with registration information call Laura Rieger at 419.530.3706. 2- Summer Reading Classes—UT in conjunction with the Institute of Reading Development, will offer a series of summer reading programs for school age children beginning June 15. The programs are designed for students ranging from four years old to adult. Classes will meet once a week for five weeks, and tuition will be $269 per student. For more information or to register call 1.800.978.9496. 3- Physics Summer Camp—The UT department of physics and astronomy will hold its annual camp June 17 through June 21. The camp is open to high school sophomores, juniors and seniors as well as science teachers, with the objective to promote science awareness and education. Cost will be $20. For more information or to register call 419.530.2241. 4- Environmental Science Summer Camp—UT’s Earth, ecological and environmental sciences (EEES) department are now accepting applications for the camp from June 25 to 29. The camp gives students an opportunity to learn first hand about phytoremediation, the use of plant to extract heavy metals from soil, evaluate contaminated ground water and collect fossils and minerals. Applicants must be a high school student in the class of 2003, and are chosen on the basis of GPA, science and math courses completed, and potential career goals. Applications are due by May 31, and the cost of the camp will be $75. For application information, contact Dr. Michael W. Phillips, chair of the department of EEES, at 419.530.4572, or visit www.eeescience.utoledo.edu. 5- Stranahan Arboretum Summer Camp—UT’s Stranahan Arboretum, will host a series of camps this summer for children ages 7 to 11. Every week there will be a visit to the Toledo Zoo, COSI, or The University of Toledo Ritter Planetarium and Plant Science Center. Each morning will begin with a look at some aspect of the natural world, and every afternoon there will be either swimming or some other planned activity at UT’s Recreation Center. Camps will be held July 8 through July 29, cost will be $130 for the full day experience, 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., or $80 for the half day experience, 8 a.m. to noon, a free extended care option will be available. For more information or a registration packet call 419.841.1007 or sstutze@pop3.utoledo.edu. 6- Pharmacy Camp— UT’s college of pharmacy, with the support of the Walgreens Corporation, will host its second annual Pharmacy Camp, July 7-11. The camp is designed to encourage students to pursue careers as pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists. Activities at the camp will include hands on experiments in UT’s laboratories, career shadowing and social events. Cost will be $45 and applications must be postmarked by May 1. For more information or to request an application contact Courtney Brickner at 1.800.5TOLEDO extension 5715 or 419.530.5715. 7- National Youth Sports Program (NYSP) — NYSP is a nationally funded program for area at-risk youth, ages 10 to 16, that provides the students with the opportunity to participate in daily sports instruction and educational programs. The five-week program, June 9-July 13, includes a math and science component, alcohol and other drug awareness and prevention education, general education, a medical exam, transportation, T-shirts, and an USDA-approved daily lunch in addition to daily sports activities.
