Sandeep Pandey, one of the founders of Asha, will address “Gender-Specific Challenges of Eradicating Illiteracy in India” on Friday, Oct. 7, at 1 p.m. in Student Union Room 3018.
The event is presented by the department of women’s and gender studies and Asha Toledo, the UT student chapter of the organization.
Pandey, along with other students at the University of California, Berkeley, formed Asha in summer 1991. The name comes from the Hindi word for “hope,” and speaks to the international secular organization’s mission to provide better education for children and improve the lives of the poor in India.
Pandey was a recipient of the 2002 Ramon Magsaysay Award – described as the Asian equivalent of the Nobel Prize – in the “Emergent Leadership Category.” He serves on the Central Advisory Board on Education and its subcommittee, Girl Education and Common School System, with the Indian government’s Ministry of Human Resource Development.
