Mitchell Katine, one of the cooperating attorneys in the landmark Texas v. Lawrence case, will speak on Wednesday, March 17, at noon in the Law Center Auditorium.
He will discuss “The National Impact of Lawrence v. Texas: From Marriage to Adoption.”
On June 26, 2003, the United States Supreme Court ruled five to three that Texas' homosexual conduct law is unconstitutional. The ruling effectively struck down the sodomy laws in 13 states that still had them. Sodomy laws criminalized oral and anal sex by consenting gay couples and in some states heterosexual couples but was used almost exclusively to justify discrimination against lesbians and gay men.
Katine has been with the Williams, Birnberg and Anderson law firm for more than 10 years and teaches at his alma mater South Texas College of Law. He has served as president of Houston’s Bar Association for Human Rights, chaired the Houston Bar Association’s AIDS Committee, was appointed to the Texas Real Estate Commission, and received the Frank J. Scurlock Award from the Texas State Bar for providing free legal services to indigent clients.
