Author to Address Racial Issues at Conference
    By Nadean Hamilton
    Jan 22, 2003

The 19th Annual Conference for Aspiring Minority Youth will take place on Saturday, Jan. 25, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Student Union Auditorium.

This year’s keynote speaker is Dr. Joseph L. Graves Jr., author of The Emperor’s New Clothes: Biological Theories of Race at the Millennium. He will talk about topics surrounding this year’s theme, "One Race: The Human Village in A World of Hope and Possibilities." Graves is a visiting professor of biology at Embry-Riddle Aeronautical University in Prescott, Ariz.

The annual conference, which was initiated in 1985, is designed to bring together people in the Toledo community interested in addressing the educational needs of minority youth and developing programs and services to assist minority students in their educational pursuits.

The program also will include several breakout sessions, one of which will be led by UT graduate Jeffery I. Johnson, national director of the Youth, College and Young Adult Division of the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People. During these sessions members of the audience will discuss how issues of race and racial differences have affected their lives. The audience also will explore how to dismantle the concept of intellectual racial differences and how parents can guide their children to rise above racial stereotypes.

For more information on the free, public event, contact Dr. Helen Cooks, assistant vice president for excellence programs, at 419.530.3821.
