Author to Share Teaching Experiences Feb. 3
    By Megan Mangano
    Feb 2, 2004

    Sharon Draper
Sharon Draper, author and educator, will speak at the Scott Park Auditorium on Tuesday, Feb. 3, at 7 p.m.

Draper has been the recipient of several honors, including the 1997 National Teacher of the Year Award, the Excellence in Education Award and the Coretta Scott King Honor Award for her literature for young adults.

Draper has served on the board of trustees of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching and is currently on the board for the National Commission on Teaching and America’s Future. She is involved in encouraging and motivating teachers and students from all over the United States, as well as in Russia, Ghana, Togo, Kenya and Ethiopia.

The first book Draper published was Tears of a Tiger (1994), which was honored as an American Library Association Best Book for Young Adults. She also has published dozens of other award-winning young adult titles, including Forged by Fire (1997), Darkness Before Dawn (2001) and Romiette and Julio (1999).

When asked what inspired her to write, Draper said, “My students, some of whom didn’t like to read the assigned texts. I wanted to write something that young people could read that would be contemporary and exciting, yet have a solid literacy base for teachers to use.”

The UT Mortar Board chapter and Collegiate Middle Level Association are sponsoring the event.

For more information on the free, public event, contact Kari Bonnell of the Collegiate Middle Level Association at 419.243.3049.
